Adequate Income Does Not Replace Insurance
A prevalent misconception is that insurance is solely for those with substantial incomes. However, regardless of your financial status, insurance serves as a crucial safeguard for your assets. In the event of a loss, whether it’s a property damage claim, legal fees, medical expenses, or even lost wages, insurance can provide the financial support you need to recover and protect your well-being.
We get this question a lot from our clients and wanted to give you straight answers. That’s where an experienced insurance agent can help. A good agent can help you assess your risks and needs and find the right policy to protect you at a price you can afford. In this blog post, we’ll share some must-read advice from an insurance agent on how to avoid this common mistake and get the best insurance coverage for your needs.
Insurance Advice
If you could give one tip to help people when shopping for insurance, what would that be?
Do not cut coverage for the purpose of lowering the price. Make sure the policy you are purchasing is equipped with the coverage you need for the assets you have. If you cut coverages due to the cost of insurance, it may result with you paying out-of-pocket which can put your assets at risk.
What is the most common mistake you see people make when shopping for insurance?
In auto policies, I see many people not including members of the household (anyone who lives in the same house) on their policies. This is a crucial part of your policy that goes unseen. When purchasing an auto policy, the insurance company requests to know the names, date of birth, and drivers’ licenses of all people living in the home. This information is used to run Motor Vehicle Reports (MVR) and Combined Loss Underwriting Experience (CLUE) reports. These reports show claims, tickets, accidents, and current driving records which help determine how much risk a driver presents.
“If you allow someone you are living with to drive your vehicle, but they are not listed as a driver on your policy, there is no coverage in the event of an accident. This means in the event of an accident, you may be responsible for 100% of all expenses (legal, medical, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage).”
To fully protect your assets, the members of your household must be listed on your policy as included or excluded as a driver. If you purposefully exclude a member due to poor driving record or personal preference, they are not covered as a driver for your vehicle. Many people go without adding members to their policy and allow them to drive their vehicles, which can be damaging to your financial well-being.
What is your favorite type of insurance to work on? What is your specialty?
I love working on any insurance that challenges me and helps me to learn more! My specialty is trying my hardest to communicate complicated insurance concepts in a simple but educating manner. I want my clients to walk away knowing everything I know and more! Being transparent, inviting, personable and patient are things I strive for.
What is the most common misconception people have about insurance that you’d like to set the record straight on?
The most common misconception is that you do not need insurance if you have enough income. The amount of income you have should be seen as an asset to be protected. In the event of a loss insurance can financially aid you for property damages, legal fees, medical expenses, funeral costs, and even lost wages.
“Use insurance to protect you and what matters, regardless of your income flow and assets!”
