What Causes Burst Pipes?
Burst pipes are a common and highly inconvenient wintertime problem that no homeowner wants to deal with. Most people believe that burst pipes are caused by water expanding within the pipe- Although this is partially true, there are other factors to consider. Keep reading to discover what causes pipes to burst and how to prevent this.
Solid ice takes up more space than water. So, as water freezes inside the pipe, it expands, creating more pressure than the pipe can handle. The expanding ice pushes the remaining liquid water toward the closed faucet. Typically, the pipe bursts in a spot with no ice because the water that builds up in the space between the closed faucet and the ice within the pipe causes the burst.
Which Pipes Are at Risk?
While PVC and PEX plastic pipes may not burst as quickly as other types of pipes, any pipe under pressure or with a weak spot (such as an aged fitting) could still burst.
Piping systems that are the most susceptible to bursting are those that are exposed, located outdoors, or in unheated areas of the home. Mobile homes and cottages with thin walls are especially at risk.
How to Prevent Pipes From Bursting
- Set home thermostats above 55 degrees during cold weather.
- Drip cold water in the farthest faucet from your main valve. Moving water keeps pipes from freezing.
- Find shut-off valves for emergencies.
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas.
- Open cupboards and vanities to warm pipes.
- Close inside valves that control the water supply.
- Open the outside spigots to allow water to drain out.
- Keep outside valve open so water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing a break.
- When freezing weather is coming, turn off water to outside spigots and drain all water from the line.
